Issues in Studies of Socialism in Modern China
    ZHENG Da-hua
    2010, (10):  5-14.  DOI:
    Abstract ( )   PDF (2802KB) ( )
Socialism is one of the most important social ideological trends in modern China. It has always been the cause the forerunners of Chinese people chose to pursue.Socialism has existed in various modern ideological trends in the modern era just as nationalism does.Since the May Fourth Movement,to be more accurate, since the founding of the Communist Party of China, development of socialism in China has followed two different routes. One is the socialist ideas and practice of the Chinese communists and the leftist intellectuals under the leadership of CPC,the other is the socialist ideas and pursuit of the Chinese intellectuals with newspaper editors and university professors as their backbones. The two maintain different understanding and interpretation of socialism. The Soviet Union is the first socialist country in the world. Its model of socialism has heavily influenced the Chinese intellectuals. The belief that planned economy is a basic property of socialism, which has left far-reaching impact on the modern Chinese people’s conception of socialism, has been fostered from the conclusion of the USSR’s first five-year plan by the Chinese intellectuals in the early 1930s.

On the "Overlapping Consensus" of Liberalism and Socialism——A Survey of the Chinese Intellectuals in the First Half of the 20th Century
    YAN Run-yu
    2010, (10):  15-22.  DOI:
    Abstract ( )   PDF (2669KB) ( )
Liberalism and socialism are two most influential ideological trends in the modern world.Liberalism emphasizes individual freedom, while socialism pursues social justice.Since there have always been debates between the two after they were introduced to China, they seem to be in opposition with conflicting ideas. But actually this is not true.Liberalism fully recognizes socialist ideas and the historical rationality of socialist movement, and accepts the value of social justice that socialism advocates. It also maintains that part of the means of production should be owned by the public to ensure realization of fairness.Socialists,on the other hand, accept the value and significance of freedom to life, and maintain that individual freedom should be guaranteed by the constitution.Socialists under the influence of the October Revolution even started the Russian revolution to help the working class regain their deprived individual right. The overlapping consensus of liberalism and socialism are attributed to the intellectuals’ historical mission of enlightenment and political reform. The author concludes that from the very start the relationship of these two ideological trends has been both oppositional and interactional.

An Analyze of Universality of "Economic Base Determines Superstructure"
    WANG Xiao-sheng
    2010, (10):  36-43.  DOI:
    Abstract ( )   PDF (2149KB) ( )
Karl Kautsky and Jurgen Habermas considered "economic base determines superstructure" a sound proposition only in certain situations, and Jean Baudrillard emphasized that the category of historical materialism should not be applied to the pre-capitalist society. This proposition of Marx has been raised against a background of capitalist society with "full universality" in the capitalist society. While it is also applicable in a pre-capitalist society, each case of application should be considered special and analyzed against its specific background.

On the Expansion of Marxist Theory of Economic Crisis in Time and Space and Its Extended Meaning
    GAO Fan
    2010, (10):  44-51.  DOI:
    Abstract ( )   PDF (1882KB) ( )
Marx’s theory of economic crisis focuses,on the whole,on a certain type of economy in a certain period that induces surplus production and output volatility caused by accumulation of "capital and poverty".The new trend of global economic development-increased payment of the laborers, economic globalization and innovation in financial development-has made it necessary to expand the conditions of time and space in Marx’s theory of economic crisis. On account of this situation,China ought to be prepared to face the possibility and practicality of crisis in the market economy.Policy making should revolve on internal consumer spending in order to establish a regular mechanism against economic crisis by actualization of balanced supply and demand in the market.

Implicit Ideology——A Reflection on Post-modernist Cultural Trends in Modern China
    WU Xue-qin
    2010, (10):  52-58.  DOI:
    Abstract ( )   PDF (1693KB) ( )
The paper attempts to interpret the three evolutionary models of the post-modernist cultural trends in China based on a reflection on them from an ideological perspective. The three models are as follows: turning the classical works to entertainment, having the consumption patterns symbolized, and making the ultimate beliefs flattened. The paper probes into the implicit core of post-modernist cultural trends,or the endogenous ideology, that has exerted tremendous influence on China, and concludes that we need to identify the link of Marxism and post-modernist cultural trend in China before we can resort to socialist core values to guide these trends.

Politics and Philosophy——A Comparative Study of the Ideas of Gramsci and Foucault
    ZHANG Yu-jia
    2010, (10):  59-64.  DOI:
    Abstract ( )   PDF (1620KB) ( )
A comparison of the ideas of Gramsci and Foucault may reveal the challenge of postmodernism to traditional ideas. In politics,Gramsci held a strong belief in the power of unity and considered party a modern monarch. He advocated organized political action, and was in favor of establishing positive revolutionary strategies.Foucault,on the other hand, was indulged in various deviance and sexual experience. He resisted party politics and considered all the political actions organized in the name of revolution to have a Fascism tendency, and then refused to grant these actions moral and ethical justification. In philosophy,Gramsci insisted on autonomous ideology of subjectivism, while Foucault fiercely criticized nationalism and humanitarian. However, that Foucault strongly criticized the defect and limitations of the traditional theory does not indicate that he had transcended the provisions of philosophy since the time of Kant in enlightenment ideas of human freedom. The point is not if he had given up the ideals of enlightenment. What really matters is if the concepts of rationalism and subject are changed so as to guide more positive political and historical practice.

    ZHANG Tao-hua
    2010, (10):  71-79.  DOI:
    Abstract ( )   PDF (2132KB) ( )
With the progress of European integration,European nationalism continuously moves on in the direction of polymerization. This tendency is demonstrated by a transfer of the object of European national identity and an intensified awareness of cooperation of various nations for common benefits. In the course of European integration, the object of national identification tends to transfer from national state to Europe as a whole, and the strengthening awareness of cooperation among members of EU continuous to develop. It is under circumstances of these trends that European nationalism develops towards polymerization. The author remarks that this tendency will surely contribute to European integration.

Revolution of Rational Choice and Development of Modern Western Group Theory——From the Perspective of How Interest Groups Are Formed
    GAO Chun-ya
    2010, (10):  80-85.  DOI:
    Abstract ( )   PDF (1353KB) ( )
The marked development of modern group theory is closely related to its methodological breakthroughs. In the eyes of pluralism, which is heavily influenced by behaviorism,it is the changes in social structure that force people with common interest to form interest groups voluntarily. But from the angle of collective action theory, which assumes a rational analytic method, the collective action leading to formation of interest groups will encounter voluntary failure. The controversy between pluralism theory and collective action theory not only illustrates the methodological change from behaviorism to rational choice, but also paves the way for the development of group theory.

Debates on Pragmatics in the Western Academic Circle of IR
    LIU Hui
    2010, (10):  86-91.  DOI:
    Abstract ( )   PDF (940KB) ( )
There are three types of methodology among pragmatists in the field of IR,namely, theoretical synthesis, analytical eclecticism, and abduction. The debates on pragmatics reflect the development course of methodology of IR studies from deconstruction to reconstruction. The author holds that pragmatics is not well grounded to establish valid academic research, and its instrumental orientation needs to be complemented by norm. The best orentiation for pragmatics in IR lies in combination of science and humanities,Which is the post-normal science position.
