What Kind of a Discipline Is Philosophy
    ZOU Shi-peng
    2006, (4):  5-11.  DOI:
    Abstract ( )   PDF (868KB) ( )
The criterion that determines philosophy as a purely theoretical study comes from the traditional classification of disciplines that separates basic research and practical research.According to this classification, philosophy is simplified to metaphysics, but this over-simplification fails to see the practical function of metaphysics or the general position of philosophy established in the traditional division of knowledge disciplines as a whole. Under circumstances of modernity, the cooperation of natural science, technology and social sciences further pushes philosophy to humanities and it becomes an unpopular discipline. However,in light of its connotation and the practical functions it is supposed to perform, philosophy should be considered a branch of multi-disciplinary theoretical study. In essence, philosophy should not be viewed only as an independent discipline.

    On Problems with Referendums
    Dean Lacy, Emerson Niou
    2006, (4):  36-45.  DOI:
    Abstract ( )   PDF (980KB) ( )
When some voters have nonseparable preferences across multiple binary issues, majority rule may not select a Condorcet winning set of outcomes when one exists, and the social choice may be a Condorcet loser or Pareto-dominated by every other set of outcomes. We evaluate potential solutions to the problem of nonseparable preferences in referendums, including set-wise voting, sequential voting, and vote-trading.Sequential voting and vote-trading prevent the selection of Condorcet losers and universally Pareto-dominated outcomes.Legislatures facilitate sequential voting and vote-trading better than referendums, suggesting that referendums increase the quantity of participants in democratic decisionmaking but decrease the quality of participation.

On Transformation of Value in Simple Reproduction with Fixed Capital in Effect
    SHEN Min-ming
    2006, (4):  80-84.  DOI:
    Abstract ( )   PDF (866KB) ( )
Transformation of value is the core of the theory of labor value. But almost all the(economists) who studied transformation of value failed to bring into consideration the effect of fixed capital and the speed of capital turnover in their various models of the transformation, including L. Von.Bortkiewicz.This paper, then, discusses transformation of value in simple reproduction with fixed capital in effect and proposes a model that reflects this transformation when the speed of turnover of capital is held constant. The author intends to testify that with the influence of fixed capital, value decides price of production, and conditions for simple reproduction to actualize the price of production and value are the same;in the course of transformation of value, the(amount) of means of production and number of labors do not change. At the end of the paper,an example is cited to illustrate transformation of value.
