The movements in the past hundred years in Chinese modern history refer to the sum of social psychology, humane ideas, and theoretical ideology brought up by schools of thoughts typical of certain classes, social strata and social groups under circumstances of modern history, with political theories which are based on the conception of the state as the core. The rise and progress of these thoughts are the result of external influence and internal changes. They reflect the congitive history of the Chinese in the course of self discovering, self awakening, and selection of life styles.Four stages of changes and developments can be classified. They are the periods before and after the Opium War,after the Sino Japanese War of 1894—1895,around the May 4th Movement, and in the 1930s.Three major theoretical shifts in the notion of modern state can be identified. They are represented by reestablishing imperial system, founding national state, and realization of people’s democratic republic. The major themes of these movements in the past hundred years are independence, democracy and modernization.Whoever fits into this trend is in the position of grasping the fate of China.
