The purpose of reform in large and medium-sized state-owned enterprises is to establish an organizational and systemic basis for operation of high efficiency,so as to turn the enterprises into incorporated entity and principal part of competition that fit for the market economy. So,obviously,a complete change in the traditional way of "running a factory" becomes necessary and requirements for operating modern enterprises are in demand. Otherwise, there will be such harmful consequences as distortion of behaviors on the part of the enterprises,an increase in the cost of agents, aggravation of quality of the assets, and a decrease in operational efficiency. Therefore, reform in state-owned enterprises should be directed into the channel of normal growth, including normalizing management of the legal person, normalizing the relation with agents, normalizing the structure of marketing, and normalizing the supervision system over property right.

Materialist Conception of History and Socialist Practice
    Chen Xianda
    1999, (12):  16-22.  DOI:
    Abstract ( )   PDF (709KB) ( )
In the first half of the 20th century, pioneering Chinese intellectuals came to accept Marxism through introduction of materialist conception of history in their attempts to seek for ways to reform the society. During the 50 years of socialist construction that followed, their meditations over and solutions to a series of problems have led to further development of Marxism to fit into the Chinese situation. Thus,a combination of historical materialism and socialist practice is promoted. Then, since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, people involved in promoting this development have been scholars specialized in philosophy as well as philosophers who are committed to the revolutionary cause and devote themselves to theoretical research. Tremendous attainments have been achieved, yet many problems remain unsolved. At the turn of the century,we should keep on integrating our theoretical studies with the reality of China,in order to meet the challenge of foreign scholars who are questioning validity of Marxist historical materialism. Besides, efforts will have to be made to turn out a new generation of theorists in historical materialism. To reach this end,the author suggests,we should stick to the practice of combining historical materialism with socialist construction, follow the guidance of Deng Xiaoping theory, and strike for even greater attainments in constructing socialism characteristic of the Chinese style.
