    WANG Nan shi
    2004, (6):  11-16.  DOI:
    Abstract ( )   PDF (809KB) ( )
This article identifies four models of philosophic dialogue between China and the West in the light of degrees of recognition of characteristics of each side, and self-confidence in adaptability of Chinese philosophy to modern life. The four models are as follows: (1), without clearly established recognition but with self confidence; (2), without either clearly established recognition nor self confidence; (3), with both clearly established recognition and self confidence; and (4), with clearly established recognition but without self confidence. The author maintains that while the second model had long been dominant in history, the increasing use of the third model in recent years is of great significance. It may lead to reconstruction of the traditional Chinese philosophy in some way, and may develop in positive correlation with the fourth model, which will enables contemporary Chinese philosophy to fit into the contemporary social life. The author predicts that the interactive relation between the third and the fourth models is likely to exist for a long period of time.
