Abstract: As the biggest economies in East Asia, China and Japan compete with each other via international institutions in order to win the regional leadership. Therefore, the two countries show different preferences when making choices among various regional cooperation institutions such as “10+3” and “10+6”. To be specific, SinoJapan relation, as well as the institutional competition between China and Japan, would intensify as the strengths gap between the two countries widens, and the involvement of US in East Asia increases. However, with the tendency of strategic contraction of US, China and Japan should work beyond the traditional competitive logic, and also develop new paths to cooperate while still competing during the process of promoting integration in East Asia.

Key words: China , Japan , US , institutional competition , regional leadership in East Asia
