Abstract: Urbanization is generally considered the inevitable trend and a practical approach for China. According to this article, cities function as motives of regional economic growth and social progress. Urbanization, therefore, is the ultimate solution to the dual structure of urban and rural areas. Urbanization is also an effective way of rearranging the rural labor force. However, the author points out, many problems have arisen in the course of urbanization. For instance, lagging behind industrialization, unbalance in levels urbanization among regions, and presence of uncontrollable aspects of development in cities and in the countryside. The author concludes that the most suitable strategies for urbanization in China in the new century are as follows:improvement of the functions of cities, promotion of development in middle and small cities, reinforcement of regional urbanization and perfection of the marketing system.

摘要： 城市化是当今世界发展的大趋势,也是中国现代化的现实之路。城市是区域经济发展和社会进步的动力,城市化是最终解决城乡二元结构的根本出路,城市化也是农业现代化的必然趋势和解决农村劳动力出路的有效办法。当前,在中国的城市化进程中,还存在着不少问题,如城市化滞后于工业化,城市化水平的地区性不平衡,城乡发展存在着严重的空间失控等。因此,只有提高和完善大城市的功能,促进中小城市的发展,加强区域城市化,建立健全完善的市场机制,才是新世纪中国城市化道路的战略选择。
