Is “New Managerial Capitalism” Feasible? On Dumenil and Levy's Solution to the Crisis of Neoliberalism

Since the global financial crisis in 2008, the neoliberalist ideology has also encountered a crisis. To solve the crisis of neoliberalism and transcend the neoliberal order, Gerard Dumenil and Dominique Levy, two Western leftist scholars, have proposed the solution of “new managerial capitalism”. It advocates the use of the state power and the reliance on the socalled managerial class to regulate and suppress the financial parasitic class, in order to contain the financialization of capitalism and facilitate the return of financial capitalism to industrial capitalism. This solution is somewhat progressive, but lacks a profound understanding of the relations between financial capital and industrial capital as well as the inner contradictions in and the trend of the accumulation of financial capital. In addition, it does not show indepth insights into the nature of the managerial class. It also bypasses a core issue of socialism, namely the nationalization of financial capital. Therefore, it is essentially a capitalist reformist plan.

All the movements guided by the Utopian ideas and attempting to create a perfect new world through radical means can be classified as Utopian movement. The liberalists have systematically criticized Utopian movements for its negative effect on the world. However, the ideas of Utopia are also rational and have positive impact on human life. Therefore, it is necessary that we take a dialectical attitude towards Utopian ideas.

My View of Further Studies on Ideas of New Democratic Culture
    LIU Hui
    Teaching and Research    2005, (2): 76-79.
    Abstract1083)      PDF(pc) (2426KB)(1567)       Save
The ideas of new democratic culture do not merely refer to extension of some basic guidelines. Instead, they contain rich and profound thought. The author holds that contributions of the cultural workers at large during the course in which the theory gradually took shape and developed should be emphasized. We should attribute the final achievement of these theories to the "collective cognition" of both the CPC leadership and the ordinary theorists arrived at through communication and interaction.
