There is usually a tension between patriotism and cosmopolitanism. Actually, there is a possibility of compatibility between a certain version of patriotism and that of cosmopolitanism. The moderate patriotism of “just patriotism” is compatible with the moderate cosmopolitanism of “moral cosmopolitanism”. Using just patriotism to discuss how patriotism and cosmopolitanism are compatible does not mean that citizens will develop patriotic feelings towards other countries that have similar characteristics as theirs. Cosmopolitanism creates limiting boundaries for patriotism. Once contextual justice is achieved, there is no proper reason to reject the partiality of patriotism. At the same time, the practice of cosmopolitanism should also be constrained by patriotism.
