Abstract: The traditional theory and the critical theory are two important concepts proposed by Horkheimer.The traditional theory was developed during the 17th and 18th centuries.It contributed to the capitalist social and economic development,and its characters were shaped by the capitalist society.Thus,the traditional theory had performed the functions of constructing and maintaining the capitalist society.The critical theory,on the other hand,was developed in the 1930s and has launched severe criticism on the capitalist society.It attempts to abandon the traditional theory and change the living conditions of human beings through critiques.It has performed the advocating and catalytic functions of promoting social changes.
