Abstract: Historical materialism faces many challenges today. Among them the theory of cultural issues is particularly prominent. How to understand the nature and role of culture? How to deal with the cultural transformation of the developed industrial society? How to explain the “new social movement” caused by the “politics of recognition”? How to grasp the contradictions brought by the cultural globalization? Obviously there is no readymade answer to these questions in the classic writers. Therefore, we need to seek the corresponding thought reserves from the basic principles of historical materialism, expanding and deepening the theory connotation of economic base and superstructure, and respond to the cultural issues in the drastic social transformation in the contemporary society.
