The criterion that determines philosophy as a purely theoretical study comes from the traditional classification of disciplines that separates basic research and practical research.According to this classification, philosophy is simplified to metaphysics, but this over-simplification fails to see the practical function of metaphysics or the general position of philosophy established in the traditional division of knowledge disciplines as a whole. Under circumstances of modernity, the cooperation of natural science, technology and social sciences further pushes philosophy to humanities and it becomes an unpopular discipline. However,in light of its connotation and the practical functions it is supposed to perform, philosophy should be considered a branch of multi-disciplinary theoretical study. In essence, philosophy should not be viewed only as an independent discipline.

The introduction of the concept of life-world has served to intenasify enlightenment of the notion of praxis.but we are cautioned not to expect too much of it both in real life situations and in academic studies. After all,it is a concept introduced from the West without a definite idea even in the Western academic circle.Theoretical basis of modern philosophy, the author suggests, should aim to realize transformation of non-Westernized cultural tradition through self-criticism of life-world,developing from individualism of existence to the social historic notion of survival of mankind.Only in this way can the stage of conscious construction of the existentia be arrived at.

Modernity of Marxist philosophy refers to the quintessence of Marxist philosophy activated by modern problems. Marx has always been alive. Interpretation of modernity of Marxist philosophy, then, means unremittingly carrying out contemporarity of Marxist philosophy. The most important significance of Marxist philosophy to modern philosophy lies in transformation of ontology initiated by Marxist philosophy. In other words, transformation from transcendent and substantial ontology to emotional and practical existentialism has always been an objective of modern Western philosophy. Compared with current theories of globalization so popular in the West, we have better reasons to consider Marxist philosophy the philosophy of mankind at a time of globalization.
