Modern nationalism in the west developed in a historical course from pre-modern "imperial state" to modern "nation state".The core idea was to found a "nation state".Influenced by this idea, the Chinese nationalists before the 1911 Revolution also set their goal at founding a modern "nation state".However, the revolutionaries led by Sun Yetsen and the constitutionalists represented by Liang Qichao held different ideas about what the nation state should be like. The consequent heated debates resulted in a consensus that a united democratic multi-nation republic was to be found. Thus, the founding of the Chinese Republic signaled an initial step towards the founding of a modern Chinese nation state.

Socialism is one of the most important social ideological trends in modern China. It has always been the cause the forerunners of Chinese people chose to pursue.Socialism has existed in various modern ideological trends in the modern era just as nationalism does.Since the May Fourth Movement,to be more accurate, since the founding of the Communist Party of China, development of socialism in China has followed two different routes. One is the socialist ideas and practice of the Chinese communists and the leftist intellectuals under the leadership of CPC,the other is the socialist ideas and pursuit of the Chinese intellectuals with newspaper editors and university professors as their backbones. The two maintain different understanding and interpretation of socialism. The Soviet Union is the first socialist country in the world. Its model of socialism has heavily influenced the Chinese intellectuals. The belief that planned economy is a basic property of socialism, which has left far-reaching impact on the modern Chinese people’s conception of socialism, has been fostered from the conclusion of the USSR’s first five-year plan by the Chinese intellectuals in the early 1930s.

The slogan of reviving China was initiated by Sun Yisen.Nontheless, since the Jiaqing and Daoguang reigns, all the progressive and patriotic thinkers expressed a strong desire to revive China and considered it their own mission.Unfortunately, the academic circle has failed to pay due attention to analyze this sense of mission among the late Qing Dynasty thinkers. The author holds that the sense of mission among these thinkers was rooted in their concern about the future of the state and the life of the people, their strong sense of national pride, and their national confidence. And this sense of mission was expressed through the active part they played in patriotic activities to save China, through their efforts to seek for the truth in the west, and through their participation in the social reform and revolution.

While "democracy and science" were formally put forward during the May 4th new cultural movement, these ideas had been probed by learned and progressive thinkers of the late Qing Dynasty since the Opium War.Their pursuit of democracy and science was of a gradual course marked by strong desires for a more powerful China and for the survival of China. The author points out that this is a precious heritage of thoughts with specific and remarkable significance even today when we are holding high the banners of democracy and science.
