The commodity value is in inverse proportion to labor productivity. This is true both with a single item of commodity and with the total magnitude of commodity value. When productivity and complexity of labor are both raised,it is found that the commodity value is still in inverse proportion to labor productivity, but in direct proportion to the complexity of labor. An increase in the total magnitude of commodity value can only be explained by the development in social work division. This is a point that has been neglected in the literature.

Alternative Economics:A Modern Angle for Understanding Capitalism——A Review of "Understanding Capitalism:Competition,Command, and Change"
    ZHANG Xian, ZHUANG Zhi-hui
    Teaching and Research    2010, (9): 55-60.
    Abstract1151)      PDF(pc) (1346KB)(1683)       Save
The neoclassical economics has simplified capitalism to a relation of horizontal competition in the market.Through criticism of the key assumption of neoclassical economics, the authors of Understanding Capitalism established a three-dimension economics as an alternative of the mainstream economics by adding two extra dimensions, namely, the hierarchical command dimension within the firm, and the dimension of historical and institutional change. This means a return of economic analysis to the tradition of political economics. The book does not just present a profound criticism of the neoclassical economics.Instead,it maintains communication with it.In the book are both adherence to Marxist tradition and important modification and development of Marxism. It provides a modern angle to understand capitalism. However, the book seems to have avoided the labor theory of value, which might bring about negative effect to a certain extent.

    ZHANG Xian
    Teaching and Research    2009, (9): 33-38.

Whether mathematics can be applied to studies of political economy has been a controversial issue.Based on a study of the development process of political economy, the paper holds that application of mathematics is a development tendency of political economy. The author cautions, though, that this should meet the requirement of political ecnomy, observe the regulation of mathematics, and meet the requirement of formalization. The logic of political economy and logic of mathematics should also be well handled.

The Organic Composition of Agricultural Capital and Absolute Rent——A Challenge to the Argument of “Monopoly of Price Leads to Absolute Rent”
    ZHANG Xian
    Teaching and Research    2007, (2): 12-18.
    Abstract1256)      PDF(pc) (1458KB)(1979)       Save
This paper examines in depth Marx’s view that absolute rent will disappear once the organic composition of agricultural capital reaches or exceeds the level of the average composition of social capital. By using a dynamic mode of complete information and a production-price mode of adaptive prediction, the paper proves that land renting becomes impossible once the organic composition of agricultural capital reaches or exceeds the level of the average composition of social capital. The absolute rent will disappear then and the property right of land will change accordingly.
