Over the past decade, studies on the 1911 Revolution have gained remarkable achievements around the issues that best reflect the essential contents of the 1911 Revolution.Cases in point include the new deal in the late Qing Dynasty, the revolutionaries, the constitutionalists, the South-North peace negotiation and its relevance to the 1911 Revolution. These studies show significant academic characters such as the extension of the themes, increasingly varied methodology, avoidance of oversimplified comments and analyses and so on.Meanwhile, limitations in these studies are also discussed. For instance, the studies tend to contain more narration then evaluation, and there is a slightly fragmented tendency in academic research,to name only a few.The authors suggest that studies of the faction relationship, regional studies, and of social classes will be the major concerns in the academic circle.

Liberalism and socialism are two most influential ideological trends in the modern world.Liberalism emphasizes individual freedom, while socialism pursues social justice.Since there have always been debates between the two after they were introduced to China, they seem to be in opposition with conflicting ideas. But actually this is not true.Liberalism fully recognizes socialist ideas and the historical rationality of socialist movement, and accepts the value of social justice that socialism advocates. It also maintains that part of the means of production should be owned by the public to ensure realization of fairness.Socialists,on the other hand, accept the value and significance of freedom to life, and maintain that individual freedom should be guaranteed by the constitution.Socialists under the influence of the October Revolution even started the Russian revolution to help the working class regain their deprived individual right. The overlapping consensus of liberalism and socialism are attributed to the intellectuals’ historical mission of enlightenment and political reform. The author concludes that from the very start the relationship of these two ideological trends has been both oppositional and interactional.

The authors maintain that much has been accomplished in this research area so far,and four aspects in the literature can be identified. They are: What are the historical mechanisms for the trend of thought in national character transformation? Which is the ultimate care of this trend of thought, nationals or nation? What is the attitude of the thinkers involved to the western and Chinese cultures? How to classify different schools according to their different concerns and stands? A concise explanation of these aspects are offered in this paper.Limitations and values worthy of further analysis are also discussed.

The mainstream school of thought in modern China in politics resorts to experience and practice of the West to work out democratic politics. In the course of this the people is given such attention to as never have been in history. The traditional political principles of emphasizing the important role of the people become a basis on which theorists attempt to build up their own theory, thus the slogan of emphasizing the people comes to prevail. However, the author observes,in the process of this arises an interesting phenomenon which is worth mentioning. The status of "people"has changed from a reliable force to subject to criticism. The shift can, from a particular perspective, reflect the historical course during which people enter the political system. This provides evidence for the gradual fading out of the power of the emperor along with the shift of the people’s role in the transitional period of the society.

Modern science was born in the West with but instrumental rationalist significance. After being introduced to China, however,it was made to be mingled up with beliefs by the intellectuals.By the time the May 4
th
movement started the features of science as a form of knowledge had become obscure, and science,in turn, took up an ideological role of restructure the society. This misinterpretation of science inevitably led to a overflow of the thought of scientism.Consequently, instead of enlihtening people’s mind, the “theory of universal scientific method”came to restrict the mind.
