Since the end of the Cold War and the collapse of USSR,one of the most remarkable changes in world politics is the shift of geographical political center of Eurasia from West Europe to East Asia. This shift has posed a challenge to the American grand strategy in the early part of the 21st century. For if the United States wants to maintain its leading position in the world in the post-cold war era,it has to make major adjustment to its current grand strategy to reflect the dramatic changing reality with respect to geographical politics. The author points out that in accordance with the geographical and political changes that happened after the Cold War(especially the rise of China) the focus of the American grand strategy in the early part of the 21st century will also shift from West Europe to East Asia. This means that the United States shall develop new technologies and find new allies.

    Wu Zheng-yu
    Teaching and Research    2010, (7): 65-71.
    Abstract2339)      PDF(pc) (1439KB)(1902)       Save
This article intends to examine the strategic position of rimland powers from both theoretical and historical perspectives. The essential points of the article are twofold: one is to demonstrate the balance-of-power mechanism which had caused the failure of rimland powers’ bid for European hegemony in modern history;the other is to show, based on Nicholas Spykman’s theory, the strategic significance of rimland powers in contemporary world politics. In the final section, the author specifically explores into the key point of contention which had caused the conflicts between the leading maritime powers and rimland powers in history, and extracts from it essential factors which rimland powers will have to take into consideration whenever they intend to develop maritime power of their own.

Nicholas Spykman’s Rimland Theory and Its Strategic Implications
    WU Zheng-yu
    Teaching and Research    2006, (5): 78-83.
    Abstract10559)      PDF(pc) (948KB)(2703)       Save
This paper explores Nicholas Spykman’s geographic strategic concept and its significance in the present time. The author holds that Spykman’s theory is completely different from that of Mackinder’s in that Spykman places more stress on the strategic position of rimland, and in his selectiveness as to which regions he accords importance when emphasizing "rimland".While many researchers tend to attribute the strategy of containment and its drawbacks to Spykman’s frame, this strategy is actually a reflection of Mackinder’rather than Spykman’s viewpoints. In fact,Spykman’s idea is not manifested in the strategy of containment in the US foreign policies.A discussion on the significance of Spykman’s theory in the post-Cold War era is offered at the end of the paper.
