    The history of reform and opening-up has become a hot research area in the study of the contemporary Chinese history.Among the themes that have attracted the attention of many researchers are the origin of reform and opening-up,major historical themes,division of stages,and controversial issues.An analysis of relevant literature will contribute to more profound understanding of these hot issues and therefore promote studies of the history of reform and opening-up.

    Since the concept socialism characteristic of the Chinese style was initiated and defined in the report of the Seventeenth Congress of CPC,the relation of Mao Zedong thought and the theory of socialism characteristic of the Chinese style has become a hot issue in the academic circle.Various ideas were expressed,including ideas of the "non-inclusive relation",the "inclusive relation","inheriting and developing",and "multiple relation",to name a few.

    On the Origin of "Two Development Trends" in History of the Communist Party of China

    The "two development trends" was first proposed by Hu Qiaomu and was clearly spelt out in "70 Years of the Communist Party of China" edited by Hu Sheng.Hu Sheng maintained that it offered an idea that applied to the whole history of socialism.The contribution of Gong Yuzhi,on the other hand,lies in his profound analysis of a specific period in the CPC histoy through application of this idea.Gong Yuzhi’s analysis has inserted heavy influence on the academic circle of Party history.It received various comments and responses.

    Since the 1990s, there appeared a turning point in the studies of the Party history. Studies of the Party history tend to be more academic, with more empirical evidence, from a variety of perspectives, and using more complicated paradigms. This trend has greatly promoted prosperity of the studies of the history of the Communist Party of China.

    This article offers a brief summary of seven hot issues in researches on the history of the Chinese Communist Party. The research tendency and research findings are examined, and suggestions for further research are proposed. The seven issues are as follows. 1.Introduction and spread of Marxism in China; 2.Leadership of national revolution and causes for its failure; 3.Appraisal of the Chinese society in the years between 1949 and 1956; 4.Evaluation of the general line issued for the transitional period; 5.The biased foreign affairs policy; 6.Studies of Chen Duxiu and Zhang Wentian; 7.Mao Zedong and the populism.
