The author observes that the idea of harmonious world proposed by Chairman Hu Jintao in 2005 intends to answer two questions. The first is what is the ideal international order in China’s eye? The second is how will the rising China promote the realization of this ideal international order? The author maintains that the idea of harmonious world not only points to the direction of policy-making concerning China’s foreign affairs in the future, but has also suggested many thought-provoking research topics on the international relations theories and issues related to the rise of China. The former includes the studies on the transformation of the concept of security, international security institutions, economic development and international security, and the approaches to build mutual trust;the latter covers issues about how China can find ways out the dilemma of the rising powers and how to take advantage of China’s economic development to promote the common development in both the regional and global levels. To carry out these studies it is necessary for academic researchers of international relations to attach more importance to empirical studies and gradually strengthen communication and cooperation with government officials and policy analysts in the think tanks.
