The crucial point in the discussion of the Confucian school and Confucianism lies in the views on the similarities and differences between the Confucian school and religion. From the perspective of the differences between the two, the Confucian culture does not bear religious features. However, while it is not a religion, the function it performs is similar to that of a religion. Both can provide organizing cultural agreements, both maintain a moral system, and both offer spiritual comfort. The ideas of Confucian have enjoyed a history of thousands of years and therefore have reached the inner world of the Chinese people, both the spiritual world and the life world. Thus, the Confucian school has become a source of theoretical support for setting up moral codes, handling human relations, and has served as ties for national spirit and integrity.

According to the traditional Chinese philosophy, the relation between the heaven and the man involves the concept of the universe, ontology, ways of thinking, concept of knowledge and behavior and values of life. It is considered a fundamental and crucial relation. The relations between opposition and continuity(liang yi),knowledge and behavior, justice and interests, on the other hand, make up the major issues in ways of thinking, theory of knowledge, and life values respectively. These are the most confusing propositions with no satisfactory answers so far. However,it is just in the never-ending studies of these issues that philosophy continues to develop.

The motives for modernization of the Chinese philosophy lies in the urge to develop and to redress the situation of being lagged behind. It is historically inevitable that China should choose Marxist philosophy. The author explains that in modern and contemporary China, the simultaneous outbreak of the anti-Japanese movement and that of the enlightenment determined that those who were subject to enlightenment was of a large population, and therefore we need the guidance of Marxism to deal with problems occurring in mobilizing the Chinese people, in social reconstruction, and in modernization. Thus the over-emphasis placed on collectivism resulted in negligence of individual rights, which has led to serious consequences. Feng qi’s idea of “plebification and free personality” is a new model of ideal personality. It advocates combination of the collective principle and individual principle.

The idea of pursuing justice, truth and honesty of the Confucian school has fostered our national morality of self-reliance and perseverance. The Confucian tradition has also advocated a progressive, energetic, responsible, active and optimistic spirit, which has played a guiding part in the course of China’s maturity and rapid development. Emphasis placed on integration of the true, the good and the beautiful has led to the national spirit of maintaining morality and respecting education. All this has exercised heavy influence on the formation of our national character and mentality. The author concludes that it is values of the Confucian school such as being ambitious and gregarious that has cultivated our national spirit of unity, and provided strong theoretical support for China’s national agglomeration.
