With respect to the Chinese cultural tradition represented by Confucian school, the May 4th new culture movement is, to a certain extent, intrinsic in nature. In a sense it can be regarded as modern evidence of the internal vitality of the tradition of Chinese culture. From the perspective of the general spirit, new development of the 20th century Confucian ideas conforms to the May 4th new culture movement internally. Along the continuity of modernization of the Chinese culture, reconstruction of the Chinese culture by the modern new Confucian school is seen as continuation of the historical task started by the May 4th new culture movement. In fact, the author holds, the May 4th new culture movement and the modern new Confucian school are the most closely linked moves in the path of modernizing the Chinese culture. Therefore, propositions such as "the May 4th new culture movement is totally against the Chinese tradition" and that "the May 4th new culture movement has cut the Chinese tradition" are both questionable.
