German,British and American Scholars’ Misunderstanding of Marx’s Superstructure Theory
    HU Wei-xiong
    Teaching and Research    2011, (1): 18-26.
    Abstract1302)      PDF(pc) (2878KB)(1784)       Save
The author points out that the German,British and American scholars have not systematically studied Marx’s concept of superstructure and thus are unable to grasp the rich connotation of this metaphoric concept. They do not know that superstructure actually covers metaphors of ideas, concepts, political structure, political power and political behaviors, credit and virtual capital and so on.Nor are they aware that the concept of superstructure has undergone a transition from ideas to political structure.Among German scholars,Kirchner fails to clearly define superstructure,Habermas even considers that it is no longer suitable to refer to Marx’s theory of economic base and superstructure to analyze the society and the state in the era of capitalism when the state interferes into economy.Larrain,a British scholar, holds that there exists the problem of "the development of the reflection theory mingling with the metaphor of base-superstructure".McMurtry,an American scholar, considers that Marx’s division of economic base and superstructure is obscure, and Jameson holds that Marx’s definition of a classical model of base-superstructure does not live up to the needs of social development. Some of them attempt to deny Marx’s theory by referring to the complicated situations in the process of social development and social, economic and political changes with an intention of restructuring historical materialism. However, they have not only failed to reach new accomplishment, but have also given rise to misleading ideas. The author points out that as superstructure is a metaphorical concept,it is only natural that it may incur disputing ideas or misunderstanding.

"Superstructure" is an important and complicated concept in Marxist philosophy. In explaining this concept, the analysis may cover six topics:(1) superstructure is a metaphorical concept;(2) this concept occupies important position in Marx’s philosophical ideas;(3) superstructure belongs to the category of social existence, not the category of social ideology;(4) the form of superstructure changes along with the tide of history with varying contents;(5) superstructure is closely related to the economic foundation and serves for the economic foundation;and(6) expressing superstructure within the political sturcture may best illustrate its position in the whole social system.

    Social Communication Theories by Marx
    HU Wei-xiong
    Teaching and Research    2004, (8): 39-45.
    Abstract1647)      PDF(pc) (2812KB)(1884)       Save
Marx initiated the theory of social communication. He believed that communication meant interactive activities among human beings, including such modes as internal communication, external communication and international communication. Communication and production are the determinants of the overall constitution of a nation and its relation with other nations as well. Communication may assume the function of maintaining the current productivity and raising production rate. International communication may lead to formation of "world history", and e-ventually leads to communism and emancipation of the human race.

Xin LiXue claimed that method of analysis was important to philosophical studies. It elaborated on and evaluated Vienna School's refutation of metaphysics and thus attempted to reconstruct metaphysics. However, the author points out, whether this attempt could be successful remains a question which requires further discussion.
