With the quickening steps of reform and opening to the outside world,increasing attention has been drawn to the issue of civic education.However,the author observes,there exist many problems waiting to be solved in this area.For instance,the meaning and contents of civic education need to be interpreted in light of Marxism so that it can fit into the socialist context;the relationship between the modern civic education and the traditional moral education should be dealt with to make civic education keep pace with the time;propaganda about the idea of civic education should be intensified to obtain more extensive and profound understanding and gain wider identification.

The discipline of ideological and political education was established in 1984. Since then remarkable achievements in course development have been attained. The theoretical framework is completed, and rich research findings are published. Major courses in this discipline are: principles and methodology of ideological and political education, history of the Chinese Communist Party in ideological and political education, comparative studies of ideological and political education, classical works of Marxist ideological and political education. All this has offered new insights as well as conflicting ideas. In this article a generalization of these ideas is presented and an evaluation of the progress is attempted.

Abstract The Western theory of political socialization emerged in the social and political context of world crises.The theory deals with the issue of propaganda of political culture in a political community,aiming at controlling people’s thought,achieving social and political stabilization and development,so as to maintain the political institution.The theory lays emphasis on micro inspection of the operational process of political socialization.As for political self development,it stresses the importance of learning and self actualization in the early stages.Besides,it regards schools,families and mass medium as important mechanism of political socialization,demanding coordination,variety and infiltration in propaganda of political culture.This theory can be of reference to the development of courses in ideological and political education,and offers insights for improvement of our practical work.
