Evolutionary economics attempts to resort to biology as the natural science basis of explaining social economic phenomena. This is a breakthrough of the classical mechanics basis which has dominated western economics for almost two hundred years and thus promoted a revolutionary development of modern economics. There are different classification criteria to define the development stages of evolutionary economics.Based on the approach of biological analogy of evolutionary economics, this paper identifies three development stages of evolutionary economics. They are: the formation stage when Darwin’s evolution theory was applied as the general analysis frame, the application stage when Darwinist comprehensive evolution theory and biological theory were further applied, and the development stage when universal Darwinism was referred to as the ontology basis and thus transcended that of the biological analogy. The characteristics of biological analogy and the contents of evolutionary economics at each stage are discussed. The future development prospects of evolutionary economics are also proposed.
